Episode #37 – The Liturgy of the Hours

Have you ever wanted to know more about praying the psalms? It turns out that there’s a way to do that – it’s called the Liturgy of the Hours and it is the prayer of the Church. If you have ever wanted to know more about these prayers, listen to Nick’s explanation of them then check out SQPN’s praystation portable.

To kick off our show, we have a good amount of news about sports. This weekend is Super Bowlweekend so we decided to talk a little bit about the New Orleans Saints and some of the ads that will air during the Super Bowl. Finally, Jen in Montana sent us an interesting piece of news about the top prospect of the Athletics deciding to become a priest.
During the show, we talk about how the Liturgy of the Hours is a way of adding a certain rhythm of prayer to your life and how the psalms contain the entire range of human emotions. We highly suggest you take a look at this form of prayer and see if it is something that you are able to fit into your life.

    Hey guys,
a GREAT Liturgy of the Hours (LOH) tutorial can be found at http://prayer.rosaryshop.com/ …..FOR FREE!

Click on the link “Discovering Prayer” and you can download a free 70 page book in PDF form that explains and introduces the LOH, it even gets into the “chant tones” and you can to examples of the chants on the PDF. (You can also order the book for $16.00 and get an audio cd with it.)

The book really walks you through it and makes it more manageable. What I found reassuring after reading the introduction at least, was that, as lay people, we do not HAVE to do EVERYTHING exactly as it’s written in the LOH (that’s for the priests and monks to worry about), but it can be adapted to fit your life. What makes the LOH intimidating is the set structure (and page flipping), but apparently, God just wants us to do our best with it, so there’s not a WRONG way to pray the LOH (as a lay person).

Personally, I recently started to use the single volume Christian Prayer book of the LOH.
