Have you ever considered a call to the priesthood? We talk about vocations in the latest episode if the show. Nick talks about his own journey to understanding God’s call in his life and talks about his own experiences in a Benedictine monastery.

Along with talking about vocations, there was a lot of news this week, from art to the Vatican, we found out about a new flash tour of the Sistine Chapel and the Pope blessing an image of Mary to help Chile.

Have you heard about the new evangelization? Recently, Pat gave a talk in Tulsa, Oklahoma about the new evangelization and its impact on new media. Episode #37 – The Liturgy of the Hours

Have you ever wanted to know more about praying the psalms? It turns out that there’s a way to do that – it’s called the Liturgy of the Hours and it is the prayer of the Church. If you have ever wanted to know more about these prayers, listen to Nick’s explanation of them then check out SQPN’s praystation portable.

To kick off our show, we have a good amount of news about sports. This weekend is Super Bowlweekend so we decided to talk a little bit about the New Orleans Saints and some of the ads that will air during the Super Bowl. Finally, Jen in Montana sent us an interesting piece of news about the top prospect of the Athletics deciding to become a priest.
During the show, we talk about how the Liturgy of the Hours is a way of adding a certain rhythm of prayer to your life and how the psalms contain the entire range of human emotions. We highly suggest you take a look at this form of prayer and see if it is something that you are able to fit into your life.

Paul Davis is our featured guest this week. During the show he talks to us about his journey to making better decisions. When he was younger, Paul made a bad decision which affected the rest of his life. Want to hear more? Listen in to our episode to hear the interview.

In our news segment, we talk about a card trick that Paul Camarata sent us. It’s a pretty cool trick. Along with the magic trick, we talk about an article that Lisa Hendey sent us about the Pope embracing new media as a means to evangelization. The Vatican now his its own YouTube channel and recognizes the need to use technology to help people share their faith.
During our interview, Paul Davis tells us about his amazing story from high school to get him to where he is now. His story is filled with a message of hope and reliance on God. If you are looking for something to help you put your own life into perspective, take a listen.

Episode #33 – To Pray or Not To Pray

What do you use to pray? As part of our feature for this episode, we talk about the devotional items we use to help us find the words to pray when we need inspiration. If you are looking to add something to your spiritual life as part of a new year’s resolution, listen to this episode for some good ideas.

During the news, Nick talks about a new application called Sleep Cycle, which monitors your sleeping patterns and then wakes you up so that you won’t feel tired during the day. Along with Nick’s review of the app, he talks about an article he found where an Italian man decided to spend New Year’s eve in jail rather than with his family. Finally, Pat plays the trailer for the new A-Team movie that is premiering this weekend.

What resources do you use to pray when you can’t come up with the right words? Nick and Pat talk about a few resources they use, from simple prayers to the Liturgy of the Hours, you’ll be able to find a devotional that you can use to help boost your own spiritual life. Episode #29 – Holiday Deliciousness

Let’s learn about some delicious holiday food! We have Jeff Young, the Catholic Foodie on the show to talk about Christmas cooking and yummy food. Jeff shares some recipies and some thoughts about bringing your family together at the table for Christmas. We also discuss our favorite holiday movies, along with some exciting SQPN news and the SQPN Giving Campaign.

After the 3 J’s we talk about the What’s My Line segment. Nick and Pat forgot to fit in Barb in Nebraska’s land Greg from Kentucky’s lines from last week… Jeff helps us out with fitting them in while Nick goes a little crazy with the bell and the buzzer.

Have you ever caught yourself “keeping up with the Joneses?” It’s something that happens to the best of us. We have Bill Scholl, the social justice consultant for our archdiocese, on the show to talk to us about “affluenza” and how it affects our society. We feel that it is a very important topic as we move into the holiday season.

To start off the show, we have Bill give us a re-cap of his booth at the National Catholic Youth Conference. For the thematic park, he put together a monopoly board to help high school students realize the faults in the immigration system. Learn more by visiting the NCYC virtual pilgrimage.

Our main feature of the show is Bill’s talk about affluenza. Episode #27 – NCYC 2009

Have you heard of CFCA? It stands for the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging. In this episode, Pat interviews a representative of the CFCA at the National Catholic Youth conference in Kansas City. This past week, along with Paul Camarata of the Saintcast, we represented SQPN at NCYC 2009.

How green are your practices? In this epsode, we talk with Rick Beckler at Sacred Heart Hospital. Rick is known for helping the hospital to look at its own practices and make them more environmentally conscious. In our interview, Rick gives us some practical tips on how we can be more green in our own habits and practices.

To start off the show, we talk about a new TV show that you may have heard about. It’s called Flashforward and is the new primetime hit on ABC. We’re hoping to talk a little bit more about the show on an upcoming podcast. Additionally, Pat has found a great video that was done all in one take by 172 college students. In this episode we have a special guest, Bill Scholl, from the Office of Social Justice for the Archdiocese of Kansas City, KS. He joined us to experience a podcast and to talk with us about the Year for Priests. To begin the show, we start off with our 3 Js and two new “What’s My Line?” calls.

In “Help, I’m Fallen,” we talk about the year for priests, the theme for this liturgical year that was announced by Pope Benedict XVI on June 24, 2009. We talk about St. John Vianney, who is now the patron of all priests and Bill lets us know that he is the only diocesan priest to have been declared a saint.

Episode #17 – Pick God

In this episode, Pat and Nick talk about their 3 Js for the week, which includes Nick’s finding that a particular prayer can be twittered.

In the “What’s My Line” segment, we have a new call in from Stephanie. She suggests two lines for us to use during the show. Listen in to see if we can work both phrases on the show.

In our news segment, we wonder about a new tax being proposed to help people lose weight by making it more expensive to drink sodas. We cover a new video film contest for this year’s NCYC and our own film contest throwdown with Catholic in a Small Town.

This week, we feature a local program called Pick God, run by Mike Needleman. This is a program that he has started to help the youth of his parish learn how to play guitar by teaching them music for mass.

We got some feedback from Dr. Paul Camarata of the SaintCast and our friend Amy. We announce a new contest called “Design a Tee and Get One Free” and talk about some upcoming merchandise promotions.

Episode #16 – Looking at Reconciliation, Part 2

Pat and Nick are back this week with part two of their interview with Fr. Tom Tank about the sacrament of reconciliation.

Do you know where the pretzel comes from? We start off the episode with a quick history lesson about how pretzels and prayer are related. Additionally, we cover some news about the Pope’s travels and a new monopoly game that is being played online.

We have a new what’s my line suggestion and we work in the suggestion from Jeff Young that we missed on last week’s show.

The big feature of this show is the second part of our interview with Fr. Tom. In this interview, he talks about the healing power of reconciliation and how making use of the sacrament helps us maintain our mental health. Additionally he talks about how important it is that we forgive ourselves and how reconciliation should give us hope to live better lives.

We finish the show with some feedback, including our first caller from China and another “Maybe it’s Just Me” segment.

Looking ahead at next week’s show, we have a feature story about a program being started locally called “Pick God,” a program to help youth become comfortable with playing music at mass.

Pat and Nick are back for another great episode, this time focusing on Confession. The episode starts with the 3 J’s. Pat shares a story about a new Catholic he met in town, while getting his car serviced.

We have two new calls for “Whats my Line”, one is from Jeff Young from The Catholic Foodie, the other is from our friend Dan. Additionally, we have some new listeners who have sent us feedback for the podcast.

In the news Pat tells us of his friend Maria studying in China. She’s our first listener from China! We encourage all our listeners, including International to let us know their out there. Lastly, check out Sonic’s new promotion to help support public school teachers across America called Limeades for Learning.

We sit down with our parish priest, Fr. Tom, who talks to us about confession. This is a two-part interview, with the second part coming next week. In this episode, Fr. Tom talks about the history of the sacrament, whether priests and bishops go to confession and why he thinks the sacrament should be referred to as reconciliation rather than confession.

Episode #13 – Spirit & Truth and Technical Difficulties

BTS #13 is jam packed! We discuss superstitions, we share a what’s my line and we debut a new segment called Catholics of Caliber where we interview Shelley Fravala of Spirit and Truth in St. Louis.

We start out with our three Js! In our news segment we talk about the new Beloit Mindset List. The list “provides a look at the cultural touchstones that shape the lives of freshmen students entering college. It is used around the world as the school year begins, as a reminder of the rapidly changing frame of reference for this new generation.” Check out the Beloit Mindset list here. Nick tells us about Nature’s Call, a young adult Labor Day camping trip. This week Nick and his roommate made a Nature’s Call promo video and posted it on YouTube.

During the episode, we had some crazy technical difficulties! So in our Help I’m Fallen segment we briefly discuss common superstitions and what we believe about them as Catholics. To hear more, check out episode #666 of the Daily Breakfast, which talks about that topic.

Our new segment is called Catholics of Caliber. This month Nick interviews Shelley Fravala of Spirit and Truth in St. Louis. Spirit and Truth is a Catholic ministry whose mission is “to bring young adults into relationship with Christ through worship of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, study of church teachings and sacred scripture and celebrations of Catholic traditions, while forming a community of life-giving relationships.” Young Adults meet for Eucharistic Adoration and fellowship afterwords at a local restaurant.

Lastly, we finish up by talking about our fourth Catholic Challenge for the month—learning the Luminous mysteries of the Rosary. Looking ahead at next week’s show, we will check in and see how we’re all doing with our Catholic Challenges (memorizing the mysteries of the Rosary).

Finding a Faith Community

This is a big topic, especially for young adults who are moving out of the college lifestyle and into a parish community. Usually another parish or a group in a diocese will host a young adult group, but finding them can be hard.

Episode #12 – Kari Kennedy, Live and Unplugged

In this episode, we have received two new calls for “What’s My Line.” Listen in to see if Pat and Nick can work in the phrases during the show. We also have a guest in the studio, our friend Kari who has graciously taken the time to come play some music for us and talk about her own inspiration for composing.

In the news segment, we talk about whether Microsoft can still sell copies of Word, due to a judgment being handed to it in Texas. We also found a blog that asks what the Bible would be like if it was sent out over Twitter.

For our Help I’m Fallen segment, we explain the practice of devotions, including a few saints and their devotions. We talk about our own favorite devotions, including the rosary and the divine mercy chaplet.

Nick quizzes Kari to see if she can correctly identify four movies in the Chick Flick or Horror Film segment. How does she do? Listen in to find out.

Finally, Kari plays some of her music for us and talks about her favorite song and what inspires her to compose music. She mentions that some of her music comes from the times in her life when big things happen. Listen in to hear some great music from the heart.

Looking ahead at next week’s show, we have an interview with an organization that helps young adults put together adoration nights and discuss their faith in a community setting.

Episode #4 – Driftwood

In this week’s episode, we are starting a new competition called “What’s My Line,” a chance for listeners to send us feedback and challenge us to work wacky lines into our podcast. Pat got this idea from a priest in college, who would often do a similar thing to help people pay better attention to the homily.

Second, we survey ourselves and see how we have been doing with our Catholic Challenge. In previous episodes, we talked about praying novenas and our goals to get in shape. We have both done a good job with one of the two challenges. Can you match the challenge to the host?

In our Help, I’m Fallen segment, we address what happens when your friends come back from college and seem to have lost their faith. Nick sits down with two of his friends, who talk about their own experiences with freedom and faith in college.

Finally, the pope on an iPhone? Is it True? We discuss the news of the week, including the Year for Priests, which starts on Friday, June 12, 2009. Along with declaring this a year for priests, Pope Benedict XVI declared St. John Vianney as the patron saint of priests throughout the world. In addition to all this, Pope Benedict has started a new website to embrace new media and calls for all Catholics to use this medium to share the faith.
